INSTRUMENTARIUM

Instruments for Transposition
between Architecture and Music

INSTRUMENTS

CONCEPT

Instrumentarium is a collection of tools for transposing forms and relationships between architecture and music.

Line lengths become pitches, coordinates become the moments when notes begin, and line segments arranged in space become melodies unfolding in time. Each tool offers its own rules of transformation and ways of interacting, creating opportunities to hear architectural form as sound and to reconsider form through the relationships between sounds.

Change the rules of transformation, and the same form gives rise to different music. Touch form as though playing an instrument; compose relationships between sounds as though designing. Through this movement back and forth, we explore the points of contact between seeing, listening, and making.

We consider the many forms that tools might take for listening to architecture and visiting music.
